Mary and Doug.. Christmas 2003
Spouse:  Doug Tully

Kids:  Our son,Chris, 33, and his wife live in Silver Spring, MD, just outside Washington, DC. They have a wonderful little daughter who is the light of our life.

I met Doug at the U of I shortly after returning from my year as an exchange student.  After 3 semesters at U of I, I transferred to U of Oregon.  When Doug's draft number was up, he joined the Air Force.  We got married in January 1968 and spent most of the next 3 years at Vandenberg AFB in central California. (For any of you who are murder mystery lovers, Sue Grafton writes about the area - we lived in Lompoc.)  I taught elementary school at a small Catholic school... had a lot to learn, since my major(s) in college had not had a thing to do with education! Chris was born the last year we were there.

When Doug finished his enlistment, we followed a friend from Lompoc to NCSU in Raleigh, NC, so we could finish college.  I taught school for another 5 years here.  Doug got a degree in biochemistry and went to work for the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).  I finished my degree in developmental psychology at a small women's college in town, Meredith.

I'd got involved in breastfeeding support when Chris was a baby and went on to coordinate a volunteer donor human milk bank for the three major medical centers in the area.  This led to a job in a whole new field - lactation consulting.  I was hired to coordinated a large research project following 300 mother-baby pairs and looking at infant outcome relative to length of breastfeeding and environmental pollutants found in the mother's milk.  Those kids are now having babies, and I'm still helping them breastfeed.  Since 1978 I've been doing both clinical work and research in the area of breastfeeding and human lactation.  I also teach medical students and residents and do a fair amount of educational material development in the field - both for patients and professionals.

My job has taken me to many interesting places.  Doug and I went to Europe together for the first time when I was invited to speak at the University of Gothenberg in Sweden.  We reconnected with the family I lived with as an exchange student in Switzerland, and visited the exchange student from Germany who lived with us during Chris's senior year.  I also went to Brazil a few summers ago to speak, and I learned so much more than I taught the people who invited me!

I'm currently Director of Lactation Services for UNC Healthcare and School of Medicine and adjunct faculty in the School of Public Health.  I've only been at UNC for 3 years, so I won't be retiring soon!

Doug went back to grad school in his 40s and got his PhD in biochemistry.  He currently works in toxicology at EPA.  He also teaches some at Meredith College where I finished my degree.

We travel a fair amount visiting family (The Webers are scattered all over the US and Doug has a brother in Sioux Falls and another one in central California.), former exchange students, and friends.  And, of course, we keep the road hot to Maryland to see Anika (and her parents!).

I look forward to seeing people and getting reacquainted.
